Annotated Bib - Natural Resources (Air and Water)

Two of the most important things on our planet are water and air. Plants and animals need water and air to survive, specifically clean water and air. To be better stewards of our planet, children need to learn that natural resources are a limited thing, and that we need to do and not do certain things to preserve them for the future. How we take care of our planet today, affects how we can use it tomorrow.

Books:

Common Ground: The Water, Earth, and Air We Share. By Molly Bang. Illus. by the author. 1997. 32p. Blue Sky Press, (9780590100564). Gr 3-5.

This beautiful picture book brings real questions to students in a way that is neither above their heads or condescending. Beginning with a simple story, and ending with the idea that after this, we have nowhere else to go, Bang has children begin to thing about the world around them. How can we protect the air, water, and land around us? Why is important to do so? This book is sure to get younger children thinking about a subject that is very close to home.

The Lorax. By Dr. Seuss. Illus. by author. 1971. 72p. Random House, (9780394923376). Gr K-3.

In his politically driven book, The Lorax, children are introduced to a world much like our own. One where plants and animals are losing their homes and resources because of the pollution brought about by mankind. The air and water in this seussian land are ruined causing a mass exodus of the native inhabitants. This book speaks to young children, and broaches a topic that in some cases may be too hard for little minds to understand. It also puts the future in the hands of the newest generation with it's powerful statement "UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Oil Spill. By Melvin Berger. Illus. by Paul Mirocha. 1994. 32p. Collins, (9780064451215). Gr K-2.

Here is a book that no only teaches students, but tries to get them involved. Great for a read aloud and introduction to experimentation, Oil Spill, begins in 1989 with the Exxon Valdez oil spill and teaches students the causes and effects of the oil on the ocean. This book encourages children to get involved by writing to their senators and telling them that even the smallest of people can have the largest impact.

Tracking Trash Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion. By Loree Griffin Burns. 2007. 54p. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, (9870618581313). Gr 2-5.

While a more daunting read, this book is filled with all sorts of information about the ocean that children will love learning throughout the elementary grades. Younger students will have to be guided through as the information is plentiful and the vocabulary more advanced, but the lessons learned about ocean currents and pollution are worth the work. Children will learn the impact that we have on the ocean and ways to help reduce the burden we place on our environment.

Using Air. By Sharon Katz Cooper. 2007. 24p. Heinemann Library, (9781403493156). Gr. K-2

This book gives an easy to understand overview of air. We learn why it is important and how we know it is around us, even when we can't see it. It also introduces air pollution, what causes it and what we can do about it. The photographs do a good job of adding to the text and the glossary in the back is useful to students who are just starting.

Web Sites:

Clean Air for Kids. Here is a game that introduces young children to the air quality index. What is a green day? How about an orange day? Buster the Butterfly will help kids decide what the air quality index is at their house and if they feel that it is safe for them to play outside.

EEK! Hole in the Ozone. A site describing the how and why of the hole in the ozone layer. We learn what caused it, when it began, and how we can fix it.

Thirstin's Match Fun Facts Game. This is a fact matching game for kids. It would be useful to help assess a students knowledge of the topic of water conservation.

Water Busters! Here is a game that helps children see where they could be wasting water at home and how to prevent it. Not only can they conserve water by doing these simple things, they can help their parents conserve a little money on the water bill!

SOL1.8b The students will investigate and understand that natural resources are limited. Key Concepts include factors that affect air and water quality.

Background information

  • Natural resources provide us with the things we need in order to live, including food, clothing, water, air, shelter, land, and energy.
  • What we put into the air, especially the products of the fuels we burn, affects the quality of the air. Waste produced by animals, including humans, and factories can affect the quality of water. Some pollution washes from yards, streets, and farms.
  • Many natural resources are limited and cannot be renewed. Other resources are limited and cannot be renewed, but they may last a very long time.
  • Recycling recovers used materials. Many materials can be recycled and used again, sometimes in different forms. Recycling helps to save our natural resources. An example of a recycled material is newspapers that are turned into writing tablets.
  • Reusing materials means using them more than once. Examples include using dishes and utensils that are washed after use rather than using paper plates and plastic utensils and putting them in the trash.
  • Resources will last longer if we recycle them, reuse them, or reduce consumption of them.
  • The creation of parks can help preserve land. Parks have many uses, including recreation.

Annotated Bib - Planets

We have nine eight planets in our Solar System. These planets circle around the sun also called orbits. A lot of astronomy people like to think of the Solar System as having been made up of two parts. We have the Inner Solar System which has Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These are closest to the sun and are called the terrestrial planets simply because the have very solid rocky surfaces. The Outer Solar System has Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Out past Neptune is Pluto which was a planet for many many years but has been unclassified as a planet now. These two systems are separated by the asteroid belt.

You’ll find out how long ago the solar system took its first baby steps, as well as the process by which the sun and planets actually formed. The Eight Planets Just for Kids.

This website is suitable for the younger audience (upper elementary grades). The website is a very comprehensive information site featuring the planets of our solar system (related items included). They have created a simpler, more focused website, eliminating the more advanced concepts, emphasizing the more basic concepts, and giving it a more 'kid-friendly' look-and-feel. Teachers are welcome and encouraged to e-mail the creator with feedback regarding suitability and/or improvements to the page.

SOL 4.7 The student will investigate and understand the organization of the solar system. Key concepts include:

a)the planets in the solar system

b)the order of the planets in the solar system; and

Background Information:

•The Earth completes one revolution around the sun every 365 days. The moon revolves around the Earth about once every month.

•Due to its axial tilt, the Earth experiences seasons during its revolution around the sun.

•The phases of the moon are caused by its position relative to the Earth and the sun. The phases of the moon include the new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent.

•The sun is an average-sized yellow star, about 110 times the diameter of the Earth. The sun is approximately 4.6 billion years old.

•Our moon is a small rocky satellite, having about one- quarter the diameter of the Earth and one-eightieth its mass. It has extremes of temperature, virtually no atmosphere, no water, and no life.

•The Earth is one of nine planets that revolve around the sun and comprise the solar system. The Earth, the third planet from the sun, is one of the four rocky inner planets. It is about 150 million kilometers from the sun. (The emphasis is placed on the Earth, rather than the other planets.)

Annotated Bib - The Four Seasons

Children are often curious about how things work and why things happen.  In fact, children notice the differences in climate and activities in each season and may ask questions such as, "What are the different seasons?" and "Why do we have different seasons?"  As an educator, you can explain the four seasons to a child in many ways!  The following books and web sites are great resources to teach the four seasons to first graders.

Every Season.  By Shelley Rotner & Anne Love Woodhull.  Illus. by Shelley Rotner. 2007. 32p. Roaring Book Press, (9781596431362). Gr. 1-4.

Using lyrical text and beautiful photographs, this book introduces young readers to the particular joys of each and every season.  "I love spring," the text begins, and in simple poetic phrases, a speaker describes the unique pleasures of the season.  The accompanying photos show close-ups of eggs and flowers, rows of newly sprouted plants, and smiling children under an umbrella.  In the following spreads, the speaker describes summer, fall, and winter by emphasizing each seasons' special wonders.

Four Seasons Make A Year.  By Anne Rockwell.  Illus. by Megan Halsey. 2004. 32p. Walker & Company, (9780802788832). Gr. 1-3.

A little girl introduces the four seasons as she observes them at home on a farm.  Each seasons brings changes in the natural world, as well as her daily activities.  The first-person text is simple and childlike, a tone reflected in the clearly depicted in the colorful collages. The book concludes with an appended note, which acknowledges that the story takes place in the northeast, where the seasons differ dramatically, and encourages children to look for local changes, which may be more subtle.

Our Seasons.  By Grace Lin & Ranida T. McKneally.  Illus. by Grace Lin. 2007. 32p. Perfection Learning, (9780756980467). Gr. 3-5.

Pairing haiku verses on one page with explanations of seasonal changes on the other, this book provides young readers with the science behind the seasons.  For example, the text answers the questions, What makes the wind?  Why do leaves change color? and Why do I see my breath?  for autumn.  Further pairings address frost, suntans, thunderstorms, and pollination, among others.  In general, the authors effectively tie together poetry and the facts.

Under the Snow.  By Melissa Stewart.  Illus. by Constance R. Bergum.  2009. 32p. Peachtree Publishers, (9781561454938). Gr. 1-3.

This book introduces young readers to the concept of hibernation.  Furthermore, the book touts that under the snow lies a hidden world.  Stewart takes readers on an informative journey, describing how snakes, spotted salamanders, beavers, and red-spotted newts, "spend their days" during the winter months.  Additionally, the author presents fascinating facts that make the spare text intriguing and fun.  This is a great read-aloud for units on winter and animal habitats!



What Makes the Seasons?  By Megan Montague Cash.  Illus. by the author.  2003. 40p. Viking Juvenile, (9780670035984). Gr. 1-3.

The changing seasons are clearly depicted as an African-American girl and her cat explore the wonders of each season.  Using simple language, rhyming text and poses basic questions and answers for each season such as, Why do seeds sprout in spring?  Why do plants grow so well in the summer?  Why do leaves fall to the ground in autumn?  What makes snow? Overall, this is a great choice for a read aloud and enticing emergent readers!

    This book covers the phases of metamorphosis from egg to butterfly, speaking directly to the reader the whole way through.  Well written and illustrated but not a first choice for the younger readers.



    From Caterpillar to Butterfly Auth. by Heiligman, Deborah. Illus. by Weissman, Bari. Colins (1996). 32 pages. ISBN 978-0064451291. Gr. PK-2.
    This book takes place in a classroom so the students will be able to relate to the story.   I would recommend this book for any classroom from Kindergarten through 3rd Grade.


    My, Oh My--A Butterfly: All About Butterflies Auth. by Rabe, Tish. Illus. by Ruiz, Aristides & Mathieu, Joe. Random House Books for Young Readers (2007). 48 pages. ISBN 978-0375828829. Gr. K-3.


    This is not like any of The Cat in The Hat books that I read as a child.  This book is brilliantly written and packed with great pictures and facts, one after the next.  This is a must have for my classroom library!

     A caterpillar eats his way through different foods until he is full and weaves a cocoon transforming into a beautiful butterfly. Charming colorful illustrations of foods along with the fat caterpillar and catchy little holes in the foods where the caterpillar "had his snack" make this book a hit with young children.



    Where Butterflies Grow Auth. by Ryder, Joanne. Illus. by Cherry, Lynne. Puffin (1996). 32 pages. ISBN 978-0140558586. Gr. K-3.
    In a field of lacy leaves, a small caterpillar hatches, grows, and sheds its skin, becoming a smooth, green creeper. It eats and changes some more, then in a sequence of remarkable close-ups, spins a sliken sling in which to pupate--until it finally bursts forth as a brilliant black swallowtail butterfly. Includes suggestions on how children can grow butterfiles in their own gardens.

    I really like this kid-friendly site because it gives the students an opportunity to apply what they have learned about caterpillars and butterflies, their habitats, and what is needed to conceal their identities from predators to ensure survival.

    A great kid-friendly site with 4 interactive games that cover the butterfly life-cycle, camouflage defense features, migration, and natural habitats.

    This site offers students an opportunity to test their content knowledge by using drag and drop labels to correctly identify features and characteristics of both caterpillars and butterflies.

    This site offers students more in-depth research information with facts ranging from Monarch butterfly populations to where they live, how they defend themselves, and mating and migration patterns.

    Annotated Bib - Recycling

    One of the points of school is to create informed citizens. In Kindergarten students are introduced to the concept of recycling. Recycling is one of the most important lessons a student can learn because it is a lesson that they can implement right away, and by applying this lesson to their life the students will have a beneficial impact on the world rather than a detrimental impact. So, it is vital that teachers work diligently and effectively during the lesson of recycling.

    The Adventures of an Aluminum Can by Alison Inches. Illus by Mark Chambers. (2005). 24p. Little Simon.  (978-1416972211). Gr. K-3. 

    Watch the life of an aluminum can from the its beginning as an bauxite rock, through the manufacturing line, through the store shelf, through the garbage can and finally to the recycling plant. The story is told through the humorous perspective of the aluminum can. This is a great way to teach little kids the importance of recycling with an empathetic and funny tone.



    The Magic School Bus Gets Recycled  by Anne Capeci. Illus by Carolyn Bracken. (2007). 32p. Scholastic. (978-0439899369). Gr. K-5. 
    The Magic School Bus series has always been a favorite of mine. The kids in the class are like any other kids. The wild Mrs. Frizzle is the teacher I have always wanted to be. Her adventures with her class explain everything with great detail and most importantly, pizazz. In this particular one her class holds a recycling drive. When Phoebe loses her necklace, the class in their bus dives into the recycling center and learn about the process of recycling.









    Recycle! A Handbook for Kids! by Gail Gibbons. (1996). (32p). Little Brown Books for Young Readers. (978-0316309431). Gr. K-4.
    With large pictures and brief descriptions, Gail Gibbons describes how to recycle, why its necessary, and its benefits. The books message is to recycle, an easy and fun habit, in order to create a safer and healthier world. This is a great book to introduce the idea of recycling to kids.



    The Three R's: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle by Nuria Roca. Illus by Rosa M. Curto. (2007). 36p. Barron's Educational Series. (978-0764135811). Gr. K-3. 

    Through colorful, big illustrations and easily comprehensible text The Three R's: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle is great for little kids to be introduced to the concept and importance of recycling. The book tells  children that they and their families should avoid waste and be environmentally conscious. The end of the book includes four pages of activities for children. The following two pages are for parents describing tips for recycling and providing more information on the topic. This is a great book to suggest to parents to read to their children. 



    Where Does the Garbage Go? by Paul Showers. Illus by Randy Chewning. (1994). 32p. Collins. (978-0064451147). Gr. K-4. 
    This books follows the trail of a garbage truck as it picks up garbage from in front of the homes, to the landfill, to the incinerator, and finally to the recycling center. Where Does the Garbage Go?     If you need to teach students about recycling, look no further. This website has all you can think of concerning recycling in a friendly and fun set-up for kids. It includes a plethora of recycling facts concerning water, electricity, heating, cooling, reduce/reuse/recycle, yard and garden, transportation, and environmental choices. Every fact comes with a fun comic! There are forums about reduce, reuse and recycle for students to read and respond to if they wish to create a login. Resources for ePostcards, Green news, and ecolinks are included. Games are also being created and coming soon!

    Sesame Street "Recycling Blues"
    Here is a music video about recycling. It is hand drawn and colorful. The music is upbeat and jazzy. It is sung by recycled objects singing about how they used to be something broken but now they went through recycling and now they are back as something new!

    Sesame Street: Recycling Newspapers
    Here is a Sesame Street video about recycling newspapers. This video describes the recycling process that newspaper goes through. Much of the video is in fast forward so you can see the process quickly. The whole video is narrated by a little girl, probably the same age as the kindergartners, or just about. Music is played in the background to keep the children engaged visually and orally.

    Sesame Street's character Ronnie Trash laments about how people need to recycle and stop throwing trash where it shouldn't be thrown. Ronnie Trash drives around recycling and points out people are throwing away trash in the rivers, in the streets, in the parks, and in the fields. The whole video is take-off of Johnny Cash. 

    Here is a Sesame Street video describing how aluminum gets recycled. The whole video is narrated by a little girl. Kindergartners will relate to this video because the narration is done by a little girl probably about there age. Therefore they will not be intimidated and will more likely be able to learn from it.

    a) materials and objects can be used over and over again;

    The concepts developed in this standard include the following:

    • Recycling helps to save our natural resources. Recycling recovers used materials. Many materials can be recycled and used again, sometimes in different forms. Examples include newspapers that are turned into writing tablets.
    • Reusing materials means using them more than once. Examples include using dishes and utensils that are washed after use rather than using paper plates and plastic utensils and putting them in the trash.
    • Recycling, reusing, and conserving helps preserve resources for future use.
    • Resources will last longer if we recycle, reuse, and reduce consumption.

    A wonderful book to introduce the benefits of recycling to sustain a healthy planet to live and grow. Have you ever wondered what happens to all the garbage you throw away? Where does it ALL go? With landfill space diminishing, recycling is a functional way to re-purpose all the trash. With colorful illustrations explaining the various recyclable products and the descriptions of what YOU can do to help, all ages will be motivated to take part in saving the planet.

    A great book to motivate the reader or listener to participate in supporting a healthier environment. This book suggests the "little" things that can be done each day to reduce overuse of products or products that contribute to pollution. Try this: reuse shopping bags when you go grocery shopping. Already this will reduce the production of plastic and paper products made by factories. At the end of the book are fun "recycling" activities to do.

    Children should be aware of environmental issues, like the precariousness of the environment. The books tells the story of a little girl who sees her teacher one day recycling his trash. A sense of curiosity sets in and the next day in class, Mr.Jones explains to the class about the benefits of recycling. He takes the class on a field trip to a recycling center to demonstrate the necessity of supporting a healthier environment and the convenience of recycling various products for new purposes. Recycling can be fun too!

    The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority is a public service authority that implements solid waste and recycling programs for central Virginia counties. This site provides educational material to teachers and students to facilitate the benefits of recycling starting with school age children. Teachers can find resources that provide links and curricular resources for k-12.

    National Geographic Kids- Recycle Round-up

    Virginia Trekkers: Visit a Recycling Center
    Take an online field trip with the Virginia Trekkers to a recycling center. Four Virginia area teachers take students on online field trips to various historical, natural, and/or educational locations around Virginia. On your trip to the recycling center, you will learn the benefits to the environment when you recycle materials. Recycling is very easy and can be a lot of fun too! Now, you can have a hand in sustaining the environment for generations to come.
